Solar Photosphere at Frosty Drew

Solar Photosphere at Frosty Drew

This is a shot of the Solar Photosphere we captured on Friday June 6, 2014 during the Solar Viewing portion of the Friday Public Stargazing session. The dark regions in the photo are sunspots which are significantly cooler regions on the photosphere that are magnetically shielded from heat and radiation. Sunspots are the source of many Coronal Mass Ejections (CME) that bombard Earth and cause the Aurora Borealis. This photo showcases sunspots: 2082, 2079, 2077, 2084, 2085, 2080

Visit Frosty Drew on summer Friday afternoons after 6:00 to see the solar photosphere live.
