Abell 1656 - Coma Galaxy Cluster

Abell 1656 - Coma Galaxy Cluster
This is a capture of the Abell 1656 galaxy cluster. A project that we have been working on at Frosty Drew Observatory and Science Center in early 2021. The cluster is commonly referred to as the Coma Cluster because it is found in the constellation Coma Berenices. Residing at over 336 million light years distant the cluster contains at least 1,000 galaxies. When looking at the image, almost everything you see is a galaxy. View the higher resolution version to get lost in the dispersion of galaxies. The two primary galaxies at the center of the cluster are NGC 4874 (right) and NGC 4889 (left). Both are supergiant elliptical galaxies. The majority of the mass of the Coma Cluster is possibly dark matter, as the visible galactic mass is not enough to account for the fast motion of galactic components. Image Credit: Scott MacNeill
