Penumbral Eclipse Halo

Penumbral Eclipse Halo

On February 10, 2017, a Penumbral Lunar Eclipse occurred. During the period of Maximum Eclipse, a fabulous 22° halo formed around the Moon. The halo is a product of tiny hexagon shaped ice crystals that form in the stratosphere. Moonlight will refract twice as it passes through these crystals and will direct light away from the source when viewed. The result is a ring around the Moon with a radius of 22°. Inside the ring the sky will be noticeably darker than outside the ring.
