August 2015 SuperMoon

The August 2015 Supermoon occurred on Saturday, August 29, 2015. A Supermoon happens when the full lunar phase falls within 24 hours of the monthly lunar perigee, which is the Moon's closest point to Earth in its eccentric orbit. On the 29th, the full phase occurred at 2:35 p.m. and the monthly perigee happened at 11:25 a.m. on Sunday. The yearly Supermoon, which is the full lunar phase on the yearly lunar perigee, happens overnight on September 27-28, 2015 and will also be a total lunar eclipse!

We captured this photo of the Supermoon at Frosty Drew Observatory on Saturday, August 29, 2015.
