The Flame of Orion

The Flame of Orion
NGC 2024 - The Flame Nebula is a stunning molecular hydrogen nebula in the constellation Orion found beside the bright left star in Orion's Belt, Alnitak. Residing at around 1.350 light years distant, the nebula contains a cluster of young stars. Intense ultraviolet radiation blazes into the nebula from Alnitak, the bright star in the photo, and ionizes the hydrogen gas. The Flame is part of the much larger Orion Molecular Cloud Complex. We captured this view at Frosty Drew Observatory in Sunday, December 4, 2016. -Scott
