Stargazing Night - CLOSED

Frosty Drew Observatory
When:
Friday May 6, 2016 - Closed
Cost:

Tonight is Stargazing Night at Frosty Drew Observatory and after nearly a complete week of signature New England dismal weather, we see no chance of skies clearing by tonight, leaving viewing opportunities out of the question. With clouds, heavy rain and fog in the forecast, we will keep the Observatory and Sky Theatre closed. We will open again on Monday, May 9th at 7:00 a.m. for the fantastic Transit of Mercury and will return to our regular Stargazing Nights schedule on Friday, May 13th, weather permitting. Keep hope that 2016 will allow us to look at the stars.

This coming Monday, May 9th, the Transit of Mercury will take place. This happens when the closest planet to the Sun, Mercury, passes in between the Earth and the Sun. We call this Inferior Conjunction and it happens with Mercury about four times per year. Mercury usually passes above or below the Sun from our viewpoint during Inferior Conjunctions, though rarely, Mercury will pass across the visible area of the Sun as a black dot slowly moving across the Sun. This is what will happen on Monday. Frosty Drew Observatory will open at 7:00 a.m. with views of the Transit. Telescopes will be setup with live projections of the event on screens and displays. We will also have telescopes available to safely observe the Transit. We will stay open for the entire event and close up around 3:00 p.m. So call out for a day of science and enjoy a much needed sunny day with Mercury transiting the Sun.

Catch up on the Transit of Mercury. Then gear up for The Transit of Mercury at Frosty Drew Observatory
