Overnight Thursday-Friday, August 27-28, 2026 a Partial Lunar Eclipse is taking place and it will be visible to all in New England. This will be an awesome night and Frosty Drew Observatory is opening to celebrate the event starting at 9:00 pm offering excellent views of the eclipse. We will stay on site and open until 3:00 am when the eclipse ends over New England.

A Lunar Eclipse happens when the Moon passes into Earth's shadow. This only happens during the full lunar phase. Since this eclipse will be a 93.5% partial eclipse, nearly the entire Moon will pass into the Earth's dark shadow, called the Umbra. During the period of maximum eclipse the Moon will glow a subtle crimson red. This happens due to sunlight filtering through Earth's atmosphere effectively scattering the violet side of the visible spectrum of light.

The eclipse will begin at 9:22 pm Thursday evening and will start as a dimming of one side of the Moon. At 10:32 am the partial eclipse will begin when a chunk of the Moon will start to appear missing. Maximum eclipsing of the Moon will occur 12:11 am. Once maximum eclipse ends, the partial eclipse will continue until 1:52 am, with penumbral eclipse ending at 3:03 am.

The Frosty Drew Sky Theatre will be open all night, showing a live stream of the lunar eclipse on the big screen. The Observatory will be open for tours though the main telescope will remain closed. On screen in the Observatory will be a live stream of the lunar eclipse. We will have telescopes setup outside the observatory offering views of the night sky and the lunar eclipse.

- A ticket is required for each person in your party / group that is over four years of age.
- Tickets can be purchased online only.
- Tickets will be checked at the Observatory main gate, either electronically or physically.
- The name on the ticket must match the name of the ticket holder. We check ID.
- Tickets are non-refundable.
- We cannot guarantee the weather, and telescope observation is dependent on sky conditions.
- All ticket holders can stay on the campus for the entire duration of the event.

Tickets usually become available up-to one day before the event. This is due to tickets being non-refundable alongside the weather dependency of the event. If you are reading this, then tickets have not been made available yet. We understand this may be frustrating or stressful as is most uncertainty, but that is how it is with New England weather.
