Frosty Drew Observatory resides in one of the darkest locations in southern New England, and one of the most accessible spots to see the Milky Way Galaxy. Catching sight of the Milky Way stretching across the sky is a view that we regularly enjoy at Frosty Drew Observatory, and one of our most frequent questions is “when can I see the Milky Way at Frosty Drew Observatory?’. So we are adding a couple Saturday night stargazing events themed on viewing the Milky Way. These are the nights that we think will offer best viewing of the Milky Way during the summer months.

Starting at 8:00 pm tune in and hang out with our astronomers and guest speakers as we showcase beautiful images of the Milky Way that we have captured at Frosty Drew Observatory and the dark spots of New England. We’ll broadcast for one hour and will offer an archived version for those that are unable to tune in, all on the Frosty Drew Observatory and Science Center YouTube channel. During that hour will zoom in on many of the fascinating celestial objects that are found along the Milky Way galactic plane, including young star clusters, star forming nebulae, colorful binary star systems, and thousands of stars. Since the Milky Way will not become visible until after 10:00 pm tonight, with best views kicking in after later, we will not live stream any views of the Milky Way over the Frosty Drew campus. These are the nights to lay out under thousands of stars with no Moon to obscure your view.

We understand that this is a rather poor compromise for this event, which normally allows visitors to see the Milky Way with their own eyes as it stretches across the sky. Though this is the best we can do at this time. We will be hosting several of these nights over the summer season at Frosty Drew Observatory and are working hard to re-open in time for the next event.
