It was originally named Horologium Oscillitorium to honor Christian Huygens, the inventor of the pendulum clock in 1656-57. Like many of de Lacaille's other cumbersome constellation names, Horologium Oscillitorium was shortened in modern times. Huygens is also famous for discovering Saturn's rings.
