Messier 109
The Messier 109 (M109) galaxy is the furthest object in the Messier Catalog. Residing at over 80 million light years distant, it is also one of the dimmest objects in the catalog. The galaxy is a barred spiral galaxy that is oriented about 45ยบ tilted from our view. Found in the constellation Ursa Major, M109 is located just to the bottom right of the lower left star in the Big Dipper's cup. This galaxy is 180,000 light years in diameter, and has a stellar population upward of 1 trillion stars. M109 is part of the Ursa Major Cloud, which is a galactic grouping containing up to 80 galaxies, with M109 being the brightest component of the group.
