Aurora Borealis
The Aurora Borealis, also known commonly as The Northern Lights, are a phenomenon that occur around the Earth's north and south poles. Though occasionally a geomagnetic storm is strong enough to bring the Aurora closer to the mid latitudes. On May 10-12, 2024, one of the most active displays of the Aurora Borealis in 500 years occurred, bringing the Northern Lights as far south as Mexico. Even though this storm was significant, it is not all that uncommon during Solar Maximum, the most active time of the 11 year solar sunspot cycle, to see the Northern Lights in Southern New England.
This gallery is a collection of images captured by the Frosty Drew Astronomy Team of the Aurora Borealis. Some will be captured at Frosty Drew Observatory, others in the Southern New England region. Most images are from the May 11, 2024, and October 10, 2024 events, but others will be shown here as well. Enjoy!
